Maduro Will Evade Referendum

President Maduro Will Not Face a Referendum
Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro can count himself lucky that he’ll be in office for quite some time.

Vice President Aristobulo Isturiz has broken the Dateas news that Maduro will not have to worry about a referendum forcing him out of power because there won’t be a referendum taking place this time. It was only two weeks ago that members of the opposition party including Jose Manuel Gonzalez handing out a petition that was signed by millions of people calling for a recall referendum against Maduro.

However, Isturiz said that the opposition acted too late to get a referendum going, as well as handling the process poorly and committing fraud in the process. On the other side of the issues, the opposition has hinted that a referendum would be a challenge to start because of the notion that the National Electoral Council was full of government loyalists who would not push for it.

In fact nearly three quarters of citizens have called for his removal. The economy has contracted by 5.7% in the last year, inflation is expanding and the price of oil has dropped significantly, worse since the country’s economy is based on oil. As a result, basic food and water services have been very scarce.

Freedom – the Yeonmi Park Story

What could a 20-year-old, slip of a girl have possibly done to make an entire country launch a propaganda campaign against her? Escape their communist regime, of course. Yeonmi Park spoke recently with Reason TV about her harrowing journey out of North Korea, the tremendous and horrific obstacles she faced and her book, in which she recounts her story.
Yeonmi was just 13 years old when she and her mother embarked on their journey that at first brought them to China. Their trek lasted for years and took them on a long and convoluted journey before they safely reached South Korea.

In her Amazon released book, In Order to Live: A North Korean Girl’s Journey to Freedom, she recounts the hardships she and her family had to endure even before they left North Korea. The poverty, hunger, and the very real threat of concentration camps was very real. She tells of her travels that put her in contact with criminal elements, specifically, human traffickers, and the abuse she suffered at their hands.

The loss of her father was a huge blow to her. He had escaped himself and joined up with her, but sadly, he lost a battle with cancer that had gone untreated.

Yeonmi expresses concern that other countries see North Korea as a joke, and she acknowledges it is in fact, a very horrible joke.

She is currently living in South Korea and is a criminal justice student. She is a passionate activist and has spoken at several human rights summits.
